'Tis the Season for Temptations

The holiday season has arrived way too quickly, where in the world did the year go?

This year has been more stressful than in the past.  Trying to juggle work deadlines, meetings, kid's activities, family birthdays, buying the perfect gifts, trips to the post office, and preparing for the holidays can become very overwhelming.  It becomes a Stress Storm!

How do you cope with the stress storm?

Enter the temptations and I'm not talking about the singing group.  I'm talking about the

Peppermint Mochas...
Chestnut Praline Lattes...
Hot Chocolate with marshmallows...
Chocolates in Christmas packages...
Pies, Cakes, Fudge...
Oops, chocolate covered cherries, gingerbread cookies and eggnog also hopped into my shopping cart...

The temptations are endless, right?  So many temptations! Who doesn't love chocolate and cupcakes?

There's a simple solution - just don't buy any of it!  Well, that's not realistic and restricting yourself from the fun of the holidays just isn't fun. So, instead of holding yourself to unrealistic goals, there are a few tips that can help you keep it all under control.

Tips to Have a Holly Jolly Christmas without the Santa Belly

#1 - Eat breakfast!  Before eating, drink a full glass of water and then make either a protein shake (low sugar) or an egg white scramble with some blueberries.  Eating breakfast helps to curb those cravings first thing in the morning and gets you started off right.

#2 - When you start to crave a snack or feel hungry, grab a glass of water to fill you up.  To help mimic the peppermint flavor of a peppermint mocha, add fresh mint!  It's really good. Another option is green tea with a little mint or honey.

#3 - Eat 3 meals and 2 snacks a day to eliminate those cravings for all those holiday temptations. I tend to grab a Dannon Light & Fit Toasted Coconut greek yogurt during those snack times and throw in a few slivered almonds or dark chocolate mini chocolate chips for crunch. It's a great snack and much better for you.

#4 - Pick one treat you love - that Chestnut Praline Latte or Gingerbread cookies - and indulge in moderation.  Pick a cheat day when you are allowed to have 1 or 2 snacks you love.  Knowing your cheat day and planning it helps you resist the temptation on the non-cheat days, because it is something you look forward to.  If you have a holiday party, pick that day as your cheat day and prepare to balance healthy choices with two treats you can't resist.

#5 - Remember to move!  You don't have to run a marathon every day to stay fit. Get outside when you can, but when the weather isn't cooperating, have a backup cardio workout or get a couple of dumbbells for strength training. Another great indoor workout option is a TRX. If you need to do some shopping, plan extra time before the stores open to walk the mall.  Get creative and don't let weather keep you from moving your body! There are also plenty of really fun holiday runs - Jingle Bell Jogs, Running from the Grinch, find a theme you like and get your friends to join you!

It may be the season for temptations, but just a little nutrition planning and exercise go a long way!  Your body will thank you for it and you will have less pounds to lose when writing your New Year's Resolutions!

If you have the right gear, you can get outside no matter the weather.  My favorite cold weather exercise wear include:
  • My Skirt Sports Beanie - great in the snow!
  • Toasty Vest (in photo below)
  • Wrapsody (skirt with leggings built in, see photo below)
